Santos Supports Anti-whaling Crew

Local health food company Santos would like to say a big  thank you to the kind people of the Byron Shire, and the generous Santos staff, who donated money towards the crew of the Sea Shepherd ship, Steve Irwin. All money raised was used to supply food at cost to the crew for their campaign currently underway, ‘Operation Musashi'.
A total of $500 was donated by the public. Santos itself matched the figure.

But more was needed if the crew were to survive the icy waters of the Antarctic for the proposed 90 day campaign.
‘Once we knew how much money we could spend, we got into contact with Nicola Paris and Zin Rain, fundraising coordinators for the Steve Irwin Galley Team, and asked them for a wishlist of food that was available from the Santos Warehouse,' said Ryan Hamilton, responsible for coordinating the fundraising effort on behalf of Santos. ‘We went through the list and it became obvious that more money was needed – $5,000 more to be precise.'

A call was made to Santos' managing director John Dolman, and a request put in for $5,000 to be made available from the Santos Staff Charity Fund. The go-ahead was given, and two pallets of food were packed, weighing in at just under one and a half tonnes.

On November 29, $6,000 worth of food was delivered by Santos to the Steve Irwin galley. Included in the delivery were donations from three other local businesses, Abundance Herbs, Bun Coffee and Byron Bay Coffee Company. Byron Bay Health Food Distributors arranged, at cost, a shipment of Nuttelex.

This year the Japanese whaling fleet is targeting 935 threatened Piked whales plus 50 endangered Fin whales in an established Whale Sanctuary in violation of a global moratorium on commercial whaling.
