This soft date originated in Morocco where it was wiped out by the Bayoud disease. 13 offshoots were taken to America and progeny from these plants have provided material for this variety. This variety is now grown extensively in Israel and the United States where it is establishing itself as the most popular variety. In Australia it commands the lead in the market place being the highest priced and most popular date sold. Although classed as a soft date, it is firmer than varieties like Barhi and Khadrawy. The fruit has been only slightly damaged by occasional rains and high humidity. The fruit is variable in size but characteristically very large and broadly oblong oval to somewhat ovate. Irregularities in shape are common and are associated with ridges on the seed.
