BIG Announcement Santos' Byron Store moves up town to Jonson St.

arrive at new storeSantos in Byron Bay recently moved from its old store at shop 4, no 8 Lawson Street where it had been operating for the last 15 years, to its new, larger location at 105 Jonson Street. The move was accomplished over a hard working weekend, early in March.2004

leaving old storeGlamour, glitz, culture, high society, ultimate cool with a mix of The Flintstones and the Mediterranean came to Byron Bay in the shape of the Santos new store at 105 Jonson Street, opposite Woolworth's. Our new store was immediately a success in terms of everyone’s expectations. Both customers and staff enjoy a pleasant environment that is spacious, light, beautiful, and well designed. The shop has a large, welcome opening to Jonson street. There are many more products on sale, plus a room for naturopathic consultations, as well as a great deli – vegetarian takeaway bar, selling organic juices, smoothies, salads and other goodies. The shelving curves, the gardens uplift, and the food and other goods can be seen and appreciated more. The rich and famous are already shopping here…so if you want to be someone, come and shop with us! (P.S. if you don’t know who you want to be, our friendly staff can fill you in.)

Since opening, the new Byron Santos has already proved to be extremely popular. So if you haven’t seen it for yourself, do yourself a pleasant favour and take a look. The opening hours at Byron are now Monday to Friday 8.30am to 6.30pm, with Saturday 9.30 am to 5pm, and Sunday 10 am to 4pm. Phone 66857071

Santos goes out of its way to make our goods and services as user friendly as possible, so we have made this newsletter a multiple use edition….The back of this edition may be used for resting your elbows on, or for drawing maps. The individual type may be cut out and stored for future use. Simply cut out all of the letters and store them alphabetically, then simply glue each letter onto a blank page to produce the desired correspondence. Or for a final use, once the newsletter has been read it can be torn and used to fill in little holes in the wall

For a good time out, why not call in to chat and chew the fat with our organic vegies. You may even meet other like-minded vegetables.
Santos Handy Hints No 29. If you can’t find your hairbrush or comb, comb and part your hair using a knife and fork.
Remember….each dollar is a vote to your reality, spend it wisely….choose health, humanity and ecology!

Santos has been in operation in the Byron shire for the last 25 years. We are a cooperative, community owned store, who support many functions in our local community.

We are not a supermarket, nor will we ever become one, it is not in keeping with our philosophy.
A few things that separate us from Supermarkets are listed below…..

  1. *You will not be under video surveillance in our stores.
  2. *Our lighting is designed more for the comfort of people than for highlighting merchandise.
  3. You will not experience supermarket lighting sickness, or sensitive eyes, in our stores.
  4. *We do not play muzak™
  5. *You will not be greeted artificially at our checkout.
  6. *Our stores are not designed to keep you ensnared in endless rat-like rows of goods.
  7. *You will not hear recorded messages relaying ‘nice-sounding’ advertising or advice.
  8. *We do not encourage greed with excessive advertising of low-value, low cost consumer goods.
  9. *Our top twenty sellers are mostly nutritious food items, and largely organic.
Santos list is as follows…
  1. Fruit.
  2. Vegetables.
  3. Dried foods.
  4. Cold foods including dairy and tofu products.
  5. Health remedies.
  1. Bread.
  2. Beauty care products.
  3. Drinks.
  4. Tea and coffee.

You may be amazed to see that the first food item in the supermarket list is "Pura Milk" which sold only half as much as Coca Cola. What is the world coming to?

*We do not enforce the cheapest prices on growers of produce. We pay what is fair and reasonable.
*Our suppliers do not have to pay for shelf space to display their goods.

*Often the arrival of a supermarket in a small town can mean the closure of many small businesses, whose income in turn was spent in the local town. Supermarket profits usually go to shareholders in the cities, or to owners overseas. Santos supports the Byron shire economy.

*Sometimes we cannot compete price-wise with supermarkets who have bulk-buying power, yet often we can…for instance check our organic fruit and vegie pricing against theirs, sometimes we are even cheaper than their non-organic alternatives.

*We support your health and the health of the planet. We know that our food and lifestyle choices affect not only our body/mind but also the health of the environment.

TO CREATE A STATE OF ONGOING DELIGHT

Surely this is what is behind the idea of good health. We may strive to gain energy by going to the gym, doing yoga, or going on a special diet, but if we have not a sense of natural delight in these things, or more importantly in life itself, then what are we gaining?
It seems many of us push ourselves with the idea of gaining some new level of freedom and vitality, whilst forgetting the delight in the simple pleasures that life bestows upon us every day.

At Santos we do stock an extensive range of herbal and dietary supplements for those times when we need extra resources…. however we believe that the healthy path is based essentially on organically grown food, clean air and water, moderate exercise, loving relationships, and quality time spent in nature…. surely these things are fundamental in creating ongoing delight….

I have just three things to teach, simplicity, patience and compassion. Lao Tzu
