Cuba's Organic Revolution

British scientists working on the world's biggest tests of the environmental impact of genetically modified (GM) crops have reported that two species harmed wildlife but that a third had a positive effect.
The Government decided to stage the tests, known as farm-scale evaluations, to assess the impact on wildlife of plants genetically modified to tolerate certain herbicides.
The tests found that GM beet and spring rape were worse for wildlife than conventional varieties of the crop.
But the studies also showed that growing herbicide-tolerant GM maize was better for many types of wildlife than conventional maize.

A new report from Australia's peak organic certifying body says one in 10 primary producers will be farming organically by 2020.
The report from Biological Farmers Australia says the number of organic producers has grown by 20 to 30 per cent over the last two years but that still represents only 2 per cent of all primary producers.
The groups chief executive, Dr Andy Monk, says the industry needs more organic farmers because at the moment demand for produce both domestically and overseas is far greater than supply.

REVERSAL ON NON-FOOD NATIONAL ORGANIC STANDARDS
WASHINGTON, DC - In an unexpected move, Anne Veneman, the Secretary of Agriculture announced today that the United Stated Department of Agriculture (USDA) has decided to rescind directives made in April of 2004 that weakened organic standards and threw the organic industry into a tailspin.
