A Three-Week Cleansing Diet for Spring

With the arrival of the warmer weather we can turn our thoughts to cleansing.  During winter we have usually consumed richer and heavier foods to keep our bodies warm and we have usually been less active also.  So now is the time to get an exercise routine under way and to cleanse the body of any accumulated toxins.  The benefits will be:

Improved circulation
The bloodstream will carry oxygen more efficiently and remove metabolic wastes more effectively
Improved energy
Healthier looking skin
Less aches and pains
Improved digestion as well as bowels working more effectively
Improvement of mental and emotional states
 
So, how is this possible?  One of the easiest and most effective cleanses I have found is based on food combining.  Here are the ground rules:
 
1. Have one starch meal a day (i.e. organic rice, wheat-free pasta, potatoes, wheat-free sour dough bread, corn etc.) and one protein meal a day (fish, eggs, white cheese, soy products) but do not combine starches and proteins together at the same meal.
 
2. 80% of your diet should come from vegetables and fruits plus a small amount of some other alkaline foods like almonds, brazil nuts, yoghurt and buttermilk. 
 
3. The other 20% of your diet will come from acid forming foods, e.g. beans and lentils, rice, eggs, fish, bread, tofu and tempeh.
 
4. Limit dairy products to small amounts of organic butter, white cheese, yoghurt and buttermilk.  Make your own yoghurt if you can.
 
5. All non-starchy vegetables and salads can be eaten at any meal with either the protein or the starch meal.
 
6. Have one fruit meal a day, usually breakfast, i.e. fruit salad and yoghurt or a fresh fruit or vegie juice if trying to lose weight or needing extra cleansing.
 
7. Dry skin brush every morning before showering.
 
8. Exercise for 30 – 40 minutes every day in the sun if possible.
 
9. Meditate or have quiet contemplation time for 10 – 15 minutes a day, preferably mornings.
 
10. Drink 1-2 litres of filtered water a day.
 
11. Avoid all processed and packaged food, alcohol, coffee, and other drugs or toxins.
 
Example of your daily routine:
 
On Rising:  Consume a large glass of warm water with the juice of one small lemon or 1 dessertspoon of apple cider vinegar. This will help to alkalise your system, aid liver cleansing and improve digestion.
Meditate 10 – 15 mins.
Exercise Routine – a brisk 30-minute walk or a swim in the ocean if possible.
Dry skin brush before showering – finish with cool water.
 
Breakfast:  Fresh organic fruit salad with homemade yoghurt or a good organic yoghurt.  Tahini can be added to this.  OR
A protein breakfast of soft poached eggs with tomatoe and mushrooms, no bread.  OR
A starch breakfast of raw soaked muesli with yoghurt.
 
Lunch:  Protein (tofu, tempeh, fish, eggs or white cheese) with vegetables and or salad.  OR
Starch meal of legumes, beans, potatoes, brown rice, corn or wholegrain breads etc. with salad and/or vegetables.  Choose only one protein food or one to two starch foods with your salad and vegies.  Salad dressings can be used consisting of olive oil or flaxseed oil, lemon juice or apple cider vinegar, yoghurt, Celtic or Himalayan salt, herbs, garlic etc.
 
Dinner:  Same choice as lunch – either a protein meal or a starch meal.  Choose the one you did not have for lunch.
 
Snacks – try to avoid snacking between meals but almonds or brazil nuts are good if you have to.  Otherwise herbal teas and diluted fresh vegie or herb juices can be consumed.  Dandelion or Rooibos Teas are beneficial.  Drink water in between meals and not with meals.  
 
Enjoy your Three-Week Spring Cleanse and don’t be alarmed if you have some signs of a “healing crises”.  This could be in the form of diarrhoea, pimples, a cold or general tiredness.  The body will be throwing off toxins and you may need to rest.  A healing crisis is more likely to occur if you are very toxic.  Always consult a health practitioner if your symptoms are severe or they do not clear up within a few days.
