The Byron Shire’s first retail soft-plastic recycling system
We continue to demonstrate our focus on environmental sustainability having established the Byron Shire’s first retail soft-plastic recycling system. Across all our stores we separate any soft-plastic that is not labelled with a recycling symbol and by doing so are diverting on average 1300L of plastic waste from entering landfill each week.
In essence this plastic would have entered landfill and through a slow degradation process polluted water ways and emitted unfriendly gases to our atmosphere. Instead it is now being recycled. All plastic is washed if necessary, bundled accordingly and through our local waste management company compressed and sold on the international plastic market for recycling into new products.
With this now in place and working successfully, we have partnered with a local organisation ‘Waste Free Futures’ who are currently trialing this system with two other retail businesses. They wish to extend this program incrementally across the shire which theoretically will have large scale impacts on the landfill quantities produced by retail businesses.
