Cardamom is a tropical, shade loving spice from the ginger family, Zingiberacae family, that
produces small knobbly triangular seedpod. Green cardamon is referred to as the 'Queen of spice'. In
fact, the worlds supply of cardamon was harvested from wild rainforests in Sri Lanka and Southern
India (to which it is native) until the end of the 19th century.
Green cardamon is used as a flavouring in both food and drink and sweet and savoury dishes,
commonly used in India for Masala Chai and in the Middle East to enhance coffee. They come in two
main varities - green cardamom and black/brown cardamom.
Medicinally, green cardamon is used to treat flatulence, relieve griping pains and stimulate
appetite and flow of saliva.
Medicinal cardamon tea:
Pour boiling water over 1 teaspoon of crushed cardamon seeds and leave to infuse for 10-20
minutes. Drink 3 times a day before meals to assist treating loss of appetite and flatulence.
