Well, ginger, humble ginger, yet one of the worlds most commonly used spices for culinary and
medicinal uses. It is interesting to know that the origins of ginger are not known for certain,
however since antiquity there have references to it's use by the ancient Chinese and Hindu
suggesting that it may have originated somewhere between Northern India and East Asia.
Ginger is the oldest oriental spice to have reached South Eastern Europe and has also reached the
caribbean; ginger is a tropical perennial, perhaps why it grew so well in Jamaica in the 16th
century. It is said that the first gingerbread was made in the isle of Rhodes near Greece
2400BC. It is mentioned in the Koran stating that those who reach paradise will not be denied the
pleasure of ginger flavoured water. Ginger was finally known in Germany and France in the 9th
century and references to it in England in the 11th century.
Ginger can be used in sweet an savoury dishes, cakes and biscuits, curries and soups just to name a
few.
