Caraway Seeds
Country of origin: Egypt
Caraway seeds date back to 3000BC. The Egyptians buried their dead with it and the Greeks and
Romans valued it for it's culinary and medicinal uses. In fact, in the middle ages, caraway seeds
were used in breads, cakes and baked fruits to aid digestion.
Caraway is indigenous to all of Europe but is claimed to be native to parts of Asia, India and
North Africa. Caraway seeds are actually the fruits of the caraway plant.
The humble caraway seed helps balance fatty richness in dishes and are key ingredients in common
spice mixes such as garam masala and harissa. They are used as a spice in curries, casseroles and
other dishes.
Caraway seeds are now used medicinally to aid digestion, ease flatulence and intestinal colic,
stimulate appetite, help increase milk flow for breast feeding mothers, help reduce period pain and
assist with reducing the severity of coughs. A great heating herb to cold constitutional types.
