Santos, proudly supporting Fairtrade

At Santos, we love supporting local producers, we love to know their farms, to trust that their employees are paid a fair wage and to know that they are farming by organic standards. We make long term relationships with growers to ensure that we provide our customers with the highest quality organic and ethical products.
For imported products, it’s difficult to develop these personal relationships and we depend on international certifiers to guarantee that the products we sell are organically and sustainably produced and have not involved child labour or other exploitation of people. For this reason, we source Fair Trade imported products wherever possible.
Whenever you choose a product carrying the Fairtrade Mark, you are making a choice to guarantee that a fair price has been paid to farmers, workers and their communities in developing countries, and to ensure that products such as chocolate, coffee, quinoa and tea have been sourced ethically and sustainably, and in accordance with internationally recognised Fairtrade standards. For products that are certified Fairtrade, producers receive prices to cover the cost of sustainable production and also get an additional premium to help with social, environmental and economic development.

The term “Fairtrade” (as distinct from “Fair Trade”) describes the certification and labeling system governed by Fairtrade International and allows consumers to identify products that have met internationally agreed Fairtrade Standards. These standards are designed to address the imbalance of power in trading relationships and are agreed through research and consultation with producers, traders, non-governmental organisations and other labelling initiatives such as Fairtrade Australia and New Zealand (Fairtrade ANZ).
Fairtrade ANZ is an independent, not-for-profit member organisation which aims to promote and protect the Fairtrade Mark, while increasing the range, availability and sales of certified Fairtrade products in Australia and New Zealand. Fairtrade ANZ also provides licensing, labelling and certification services. Currently, the certified Fairtrade products available in Australia are coffee, tea, cocoa (chocolate), nuts, cotton, sportsballs, rice and quinoa.
The broader term of “Fair Trade” refers to the Fair Trade movement as a whole and includes the work of Alternative Trading Organisations as well as other incentives and businesses that support and adhere to the principles of Fair Trade. On a grassroots level, cafes, restaurants, businesses and other organisations are able to support Fair Trade by sourcing and using Fair Trade products in their businesses.
At Santos, we support both certified Fairtrade products and other importers and producers that actively participate in Fair Trade schemes. For example, Santos stocks a number of certified Fairtrade products, such as packaged chocolate, coffee, tea and quinoa and also sources bulk chocolate from a company that strongly supports Fair Trade principles and practices in their business, particularly in their relationships with the producers.
Fairtrade Fortnight is an annual event celebrating and promoting the concepts of Fair Trade and ethical trading, with an aim to raise awareness of both certified and uncertified Fair Trade products and fair trading practices.
